LASSIE NDALELE
LASSIE NDALELE AKA LASMAN DA STUNTMANWhen the Food Security programme began, Lassie immediately volunteered to be part of the on-the-ground team. He explains his motivation as follows: “I come from a very poor background in Soweto. I know what it is like to have nothing and be hungry, so now I extend a helping hand wherever I can.” Lassie has participated in every Food Kitchen that has taken place so far. His role extends from helping to chop vegetables, to serving the food and washing up afterwards. He believes that the so-called ‘Soup Kitchens’ actually provide a full meal now that freshly-baked bread and other nutritious accompaniments have been added. This is the only meal of the day for some families. Lassie says the saddest experience he has had so far was on the one occasion when there was not enough food for everyone in the queue and he had to tell some people that they would have to return home hungry. His best experience is working with the people in the team: he loves the collective energy and passion, and admits he is also the person who makes them laugh as they work.
